When was STORMR Founded?

STORMR was founded in 2011 with the launch of the first Typhoon Jacket. Fall of 2012 marked the launch of a full line of STORMR products geared for the fishing markets. STORMR’s parent company, Henderson Sport Group has been a leader in neoprene and wetsuits manufacturing for the past 45 years.

What makes STORMR different than most foul weather fishing gear?

STORMR® products are an adaptation of the wetsuit for land utilizing Neoprene Core Technologytm. They provide huge thermal benefits in a thin, soft, flexible, windproof and waterproof shell. They are made to withstand the harshest of elements while providing comfort and maneuverability.

STORMR products are lined with a soft, comfortable micro-fleece material which traps warm air between your body and the shell. All seams on STORMR Jackets and Bibs are glued, blind-stitched and then coated with a thermally bonded exterior tape making all the seams 100% waterproof, not just rain resistant. This construction, although significantly more complicated than construction techniques employed on common outerwear, ensures that STORMR products remain waterproof and windproof even in high winds, driving rain and freezing precipitation.

What is Neoprene Core Technology?

Neoprene Core Technology is a revolutionary concept in outerwear design. Until recently, ultra-thin neoprene was impossible to produce. Neoprene Core Technology joins this ultra-thin neoprene core with proven outdoor fabrics in a special lamination process. The resulting combination is a high performance material that provides superior warmth, inherent flotation and incredible flexibility. Interior moisture wicking fleece keeps you warm while the exterior windproof, waterproof shell sheds water quickly.

  1.  “High Stretch” Windproof/Waterproof Materials – Experience the freedom of a limitless range of motion. Just like a surfer moves in the water, fluid and explosive, you can move on land without restrictions. STORMR products conform to your body and move without binding or confining the user.  The Neoprene core, water-tight thermal taped seams, water repellent finish and micro fleece lining keep the elements out while trapping warm air between your body and the jacket. The STORMR functions like a wetsuit, only it provides a thermal barrier of warm air rather than water.
  2. Positive Buoyancy – A major benefit unique to products constructed using Neoprene Core Technology is inherent buoyancy. STORMR Jackets and Bibs when worn together provide up to 10 pounds of positive buoyancy. Although STORMR products do not replace USCG Approved Flotation Devices, they work to increase your flotation and provide additional thermal protection in the event of full immersion in cold water.
  3. Durable Water Repellant Outer Shell – The entire exterior fabric is treated with a water repellent finish that prevents precipitation from saturating the jacket’s exterior face fabric. Even though the jacket is waterproof, this added feature keeps the jacket lightweight and dry during long period of inclement weather.

How is it different from other neoprene products?

The material is a tri-laminate that is built to play on the strengths of each material, not simply a neoprene.

  • Exterior – Durable nylon that is treated so water beads off. This DWR, like other treatments, could wear out over time but water will never go through the neoprene core. Most spray on DWR treatments can be used to recoat the exterior fabric.
  • Core – The neoprene core is a very high-end thinly cut neoprene. This is what makes the jacket completely waterproof and windproof. This is also why the jacket is inherently buoyant.
  • Interior – The moisture wicking fleece inside of the material will pull moisture away from the body and into the fleece.

 How thick is the material?

The neoprene is about 1.5mm thick combined with a 1 mm moisture wicking fleece, equaling about 2.5mm total thickness.

What temperature do you wear STORMR gear in?

STORMR is cold weather gear. It is best suited for temperatures of 60 degrees and below. If you are highly active in the gear we suggest temperatures of 40 degrees and below. It can easily be worn in freezing temperatures if layered properly.

Is this a float coat or a survival suit?

No, this does not replace a survival suit but it well help you float. This is workable rain gear that can float. STORMR products use a neoprene core. Neoprene is inherently buoyant. This means that if you have an accidental immersion in water, STORMR gear will help you float. Traditional outerwear will take on some water and without any stretch in the fabric; you will have to fight with your gear to stay afloat. The jacket alone provides 5lbs of positive buoyancy. The jacket combined with the bib provides 10-12lbs of positive buoyancy, depending on the size of the garment.

Who is buying these products and what are other uses for them?

We have a strong dealer base in the Northeast, Pacific Northwest, Alaska and the Great Lakes. We have commercial fisherman from Alaska to Maine, sport fishermen including kayak anglers, surfcasters, charter boat captains, ice fishermen, and professional tournament anglers as well as general outdoor users in snow-machining (snowmobiling), sailing, general boating, after scuba diving layer to cut the wind, and everyday use in foul weather.

Does STORMR have any plans for lightweight products?

Aside from our UV Shield shirts, June 2014 will mark the release of our FUSION series. These products are designed using VAPR Tech, which offers a DWR treated, wind-proof, water-proof, breathable shell combined with high-stretch neoprene panels for increased range of motion and superior comfort.
